From patient to practitioner: Scottsdale doctor channels own thyroid journey into whole-person care
Long before she became a physician, Dr. Raquel Espinol, NMD, was a patient searching for answers. Diagnosed with hypothyroidism, Dr. Espinol was on a journey that would shape both her life and career.
Now the founder of Paradise Natural Medical Center in Scottsdale, Espinol seeks to provide the same support she received while managing her own condition, ensuring patients obtain care that is tailored to each patient’s needs.
Growing up, Espinol was captivated by her mother’s anatomy books and knew she wanted to work in medicine. But it wasn’t until after graduating from Santa Clara University and moving to Maui that her path became clear.
While living on the island, she attended a lecture by a naturopathic physician who emphasized prevention and whole-person wellness. After becoming that doctor’s patient, Espinol was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone to support the body’s needs.
Her own journey to finding balance cemented her interest in integrative endocrine care.
“After university, I wanted to be sure the type of medicine I practiced truly resonated with me,” Espinol said. “I was so impressed by the comprehensive, nurturing approach of naturopathic medicine and it set my path.”
Personalized hormonal treatment
Espinol earned her doctorate degree from Sonoran University of Health Sciences in Tempe and became board-certified in naturopathic endocrinology. She trained under Dr. Alan Christianson, a nationally known naturopathic endocrinologist, who helped refine her focus on thyroid, adrenal and hormonal care.
Today, Espinol’s practice centers on treating thyroid disorders, hormone imbalances and the symptoms that often accompany them, including weight changes, fatigue and disrupted daily functioning.
She works with patients managing conditions such as Hashimoto’s, Graves’ disease, menopause, perimenopause, metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
At Paradise Natural Medical Center, Espinol offers comprehensive and individualized treatment plans that may include hormone replacement therapy, lifestyle medicine, IV nutrient therapy and physician-assisted weight loss.
Complimenting her medical care, she also provides aesthetic services such as Botox, Juvederm, platelet-rich plasma injections and microneedling.
She practices alongside Dr. Marina McMorrow, NMD, who specializes in hormone health, gut health, weight loss therapy, IV therapy and preventive care.
Espinol and McMorrow coordinate patient care and treatment planning, offering a comprehensive approach to hormonal and metabolic conditions.
The practice is supported by assistant Cristine B., who helps ensure day-to-day operations run smoothly.
Outside the clinic, Espinol is active as a ballroom dancer, fitness instructor and hiker, and spends time with her partner, Eddie, and her cat, Tank.
‘Don’t give up’
Espinol says many of her patients seek care after being told their lab results are “normal,” despite not feeling well — a frustration she once experienced herself.
“Maybe you’ve been told your labs are fine, but you’re not feeling fine,” she said. “Don’t give up. Keep searching until you find a provider who truly hears you.”
Both Dr. Espinol and Dr. McMorrow are accepting new patients.
Through March, Paradise Natural Medical Center is offering a comprehensive lab assessment that includes cardiometabolic and metabolic markers, age- and sex-specific hormone and thyroid testing and screening for inflammation and insulin resistance. The assessment supports personalized goals such as weight management, energy, longevity and preventive care, with new patients receiving bundled lab pricing and a reduced-cost physician lab review.
Paradise Natural Medical Center is located at 16700 N. Thompson Peak Pkwy, Suite 260.
