The Local Doctor is in for everyday solutions! Dr. Ira Zunin was back in the studio for Good Morning Hawaii to explain Hormone Replacement Therapy and the benefits of implementing it in your life.

“HRT is about supplementing bio identical hormones for women during and after menopause and for men going through andropause or ‘manopause.’ As we age, our hormones like estrogen, testosterone and progesterone naturally decline. This can cause sleep disturbance, hot flashes, reduced sexual function, muscle loss and low energy or mood. Supplementing these hormones restores natural balance, reduce symptoms and optimizes quality of life,” explained Dr. Zunin.

When asked when someone would want to start considering HRT Dr. Zunin shared, “If you’re going through menopause or if you are a man and beginning to notice changes in muscle mass, skin tone or sexual function, consider having your hormone levels checked.”

HRT can be given as creams, gels, patches, injections and suppositories.

Benefits of HRT for women include the improvement of hot flashes, night sweats and reduced sexual function, sleep disturbance and mood changes. For men, testosterone replacement improves muscle fatigue, low energy and reduced sexual function.

HRT prevents declining hormones which also result in bone loss and osteoporosis, poor memory, and inflammation which increases the risk of heart disease.

HRT can cause a higher risk with people who have a history of stroke, blood clots and certain cancers.

“The risks of serious side effects are fairly low. It depends on how much you take and for how long. The key is to moderate and not excessive in dosing,” added Dr. Zunin.

Dr. Zunin also recommends always checking hormone levels, especially for those taking GLP-1s like Ozempic for DM or weight loss to avoid muscle wasting.
